MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife is asking hunters to help them gather important information about the state’s deer herd. They’re asking hunters to provide an incisor tooth from deer they take during the regular season. Regular deer season runs from Nov. 16 to Dec. 1. They say biologists collect the teeth to determine the animals’ ages, as well as health and mortality rates. “Knowing the ages of harvested deer is critically important, and more information allows us to make better management decisions,” Nick Fortin, Vermont Fish and Wildlife’s deer project leader, said in a statement. “To accurately estimate deer numbers, and to better assess our current management strategies, we really need to get teeth from as many deer as possible.”
